Every year many students enter law schools. It’s not an easy task deciding what area to practice. Even if you can’t select one, it’s a good idea to narrow down the list of specialties that interest you the most.

Below are three areas that you can practice. Use them as examples of what to look for when making this kind of decision.

Bankruptcy Law

In this field, you’ll work on behalf of debtors or creditors (individual or business). Most of the work will include analyzing financial documents and creating motion. Very little time is spent in an actual courtroom.

Many lawyers and firms in this specialty mostly deal with tax debt and in turn learn tax law, but you can also study the following if you plan to go in this direction:

  • Consumer finance
  • Bankruptcy law
  • ContractsTax Debt
  • Corporations

Anyone who has an interest in finance and the law will most likely enjoy entering this field.

Personal Injury Law

For those who are interested in protecting people, then personal injury law is an excellent option. You may end up working for the government or a non-profit organization. It’s possible to join a firm where you’ll most likely work as a personal injury attorney, for example.

You can also represent a company where you handle workers’ comp injuries or suits against an organization involving any neglect or malpractice that results in the violation of someone else’s rights. This area of practice tends to be on the lower end of salary payments, but most people who go into this don’t do it for the money.

Business Law

Business law covers a wide range of work as it’s involved with any law issues related to businesses. From creating a new entity, two merging companies, business attorneys are usually involved through large firms that are kept on retainer or are in-house lawyers

You need to love handling multiple parties and coming up with plans that reach desired goals. The work can get quite complicated, and the high pay reflects the difficulty of this job.

These kinds of attorneys also handle any major issues caused by business decisions. A large range of law would need to be learned, including:

  • Bankruptcy
  • Tax
  • Real estate
  • Contract
  • Employment
  • Intellectual property

Make the Choice

There are many areas of law you can go into, and it’s often difficult to narrow the list down. Taking a look at what interests you have and what subjects you need to study is a quick way to make a choice.

Giving it proper thought and research will save you a lot of time and money in the long run. Bankruptcy, personal injury, and business law are just a few of the many options.
