Understanding email Spoofing

We recently received a "bogus" email from a spammer who crafted his email to suggest it was from the "State Bar".  You may not be aware how easy this is to do - and also may not know other tactics that are being used to get people to open and act on dangerous emails.

I've found a good article on this topic, you can find it at: http://www.windowsecurity.com/articles-tutorials/content_security/Email-Spoofing.html

The spammer changed the display name of his email account to suggest the email came from the State Bar.  According to the article;

In its simplest (and most easily detected) form, e-mail spoofing involves simply setting the display name or “from” field of outgoing messages to show a name or address other than the actual one from which the message is sent.
